STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, KEDARNATH

Kedarnath, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and a key site in the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage, stands at 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayas. Known as Jagrit Mahadev, it is believed that Lord Shiva grants salvation here. The journey starts from Sonprayag, where vehicles are parked before taking a local taxi to Gauri Kund—the last motorable stop. From there, devotees can either trek 18 km, hire a pony or palki, or take a helicopter from Phata, Guptkashi, or Sersi (advance booking required). The scenic trek follows the Mandakini River, with roadside stalls offering tea and snacks. Due to unpredictable weather, warm clothing, rain gear, trekking essentials, and medicines are must-haves. Only BSNL and Vodafone networks work in limited areas.
The best time to visit is October–November for a peaceful experience, while May–June sees heavy crowds. The temple closes from Diwali to May due to snowfall. Accommodations in Sonprayag, Gauri Kund, and Kedarnath range from budget stays to GMVN dormitories. Food is costly in Kedarnath due to transport challenges, so carrying dry snacks helps. Medical check-ups are mandatory, and a sturdy trekking stick and good shoes make the trek easier. The Kedarnath Temple, said to be built by the Pandavas and later restored by Adi Shankaracharya, holds deep spiritual significance. The Bhim Shila, a massive rock behind the temple, is believed to have saved it during the 2013 floods. Early trekking, carrying Gangajal from the Mandakini River, and off-season travel ensure a smoother and more fulfilling journey.
